14 October 2020 Wednesday of week 28 in Ordinary Time
Galatians 5:18-25
If you are led by the Spirit, no law can touch you. When self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious: fornication, gross indecency, and sexual irresponsibility; idolatry and sorcery; feuds and wrangling, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels; disagreements, factions, envy; drunkenness, orgies and similar things. I warn you now, as I warned you before: those who behave like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. What the Spirit brings is very different: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There can be no law against things like that, of course. You cannot belong to Christ Jesus unless you crucify all self-indulgent passions and desires. Since the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit.

Luke 11:42-46
The Lord said to the Pharisees: ‘Alas for you Pharisees! You who pay your tithe of mint and rue and all sorts of garden herbs and overlook justice and the love of God! These you should have practised, without leaving the others undone. Alas for you Pharisees who like taking the seats of honour in the synagogues and being greeted obsequiously in the market squares! Alas for you, because you are like the unmarked tombs that men walk on without knowing it! A lawyer then spoke up. ‘Master,’ he said ‘when you speak like this you insult us too.’ ‘Alas for you lawyers also,’ he replied ‘because you load on men burdens that are unendurable, burdens that you yourselves do not move a finger to lift.’

In quel tempo, il Signore disse: «Guai a voi, farisei, che pagate la decima sulla menta, sulla ruta e su tutte le erbe, e lasciate da parte la giustizia e l’amore di Dio. Queste invece erano le cose da fare, senza trascurare quelle. Guai a voi, farisei, che amate i primi posti nelle sinagoghe e i saluti sulle piazze. Guai a voi, perché siete come quei sepolcri che non si vedono e la gente vi passa sopra senza saperlo». Intervenne uno dei dottori della Legge e gli disse: «Maestro, dicendo questo, tu offendi anche noi». Egli rispose: «Guai anche a voi, dottori della Legge, che caricate gli uomini di pesi insopportabili, e quei pesi voi non li toccate nemmeno con un dito!».

Reflection:
What the Spirit brings is very different: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There can be no law against things like that, of course. Since the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit.
How easy it can be to observe the minute requirements of the law and forget its spirit! Jesus insists that the highest obligation we all have is love, and we all know that a spirit of love makes a big difference, to observing the rules. God may we have the openness to observe the whole law from the spirit of love.
Riflessione (italiano):
Ciò che lo Spirito porta è molto diverso: amore, gioia, pace, pazienza, pazienza, gentilezza, bontà, fiducia, dolcezza e autocontrollo. Non ci può essere una legge contro cose del genere, naturalmente. Poiché lo Spirito è la nostra vita, lasciamoci guidare dallo Spirito.
Come può essere facile osservare le minuscole esigenze della legge e dimenticare il suo spirito! Gesù insiste sul fatto che l’obbligo più alto che tutti noi abbiamo è l’amore, e tutti sappiamo che lo spirito dell’amore fa una grande differenza, l’osservanza delle regole. Dio ci dia la disponibilità ad osservare tutta la legge dallo spirito dell’amore.
