In verità io vi dico: finché non siano passati il cielo e la terra, non passerà un solo iota o un solo trattino della Legge, senza che tutto sia avvenuto. Chi dunque trasgredirà uno solo di questi minimi precetti e insegnerà agli altri a fare altrettanto, sarà considerato minimo nel regno dei cieli. Chi invece li osserverà e li insegnerà, sarà considerato grande nel regno dei cieli».

Riflessione (italiano):
Sì, dobbiamo seguire la Legge come dice il Vangelo. Ricordiamo anche il comando di Gesù che la prima delle leggi è l’amore di Dio e l’amore del prossimo. Tutte le altre leggi sono secondarie a queste due. Gesù citò Osea 6 quando disse: “Il mio piacere è nella misericordia, non nel sacrificio” (Matteo 9.13) che dà una dimensione completamente nuova all’adorazione e al perdono. Mettere l’amore per il prossimo al livello del primo comandamento dell’amore per Dio (Marco 12) dà una nuova enfasi sul trattamento degli altri. Forse più di tutto, è stata la consapevolezza di Gesù del pieno significato di ciò che è essere il Servo del Signore Dio profetizzato in Isaia, che ha portato al suo atto di perfetta, amorevole obbedienza sulla croce. Così, quando insistiamo che gli altri seguano la legge, dobbiamo prima chiederci: stiamo amando Dio e il nostro prossimo? Se no, allora l’accusatore diventa rapidamente l’accusato, e l’insistenza legalistica contraddice il Vangelo.
Reflection:
Yes, we must follow the Law as the Gospel says. Let us also remember the command of Jesus that the first of the laws is love of God and love of neighbour. All other laws are secondary to these two. Jesus quoted Hosea 6 when he said, ‘My pleasure is in mercy not sacrifice’ (Matthew 9.13) which gives a whole new dimension to worship and forgiveness. Putting love of neighbour on a level with the first commandment of love of God (Mark 12) gives a new emphasis on the treatment of others. Perhaps most of all, it was Jesus’ awareness of the full meaning of what it is to be the Servant of the Lord God prophesied in Isaiah, that led to his act of perfect, loving obedience on the Cross. So, when we insist on others following the law, we must first ask ourselves, are we loving God and our neighbour? If not, then the accuser quickly becomes the accused, and legalistic insistence contradicts the Gospel.
